What are we cooking today?
A salad with history! Waldorf salad is named for the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, where it was first created for a charity ball given in honour of the St. Mary's Hospital for Children on March 14, 1896.
Getting started
- Wash the apple thoroughly. Dice it in small pieces and place in a small bowl.
Add freshly squeezed lemon juice and mayonnaise and leave to marinate for 20-30 minutes (if you can).
Finely chop the shallot and the celery stalk, mash the garlic and add everything to the bowl.
Season with black pepper to taste and mix everything well.
Add roughly chopped walnuts, keep some halves aside for garnish.
Wash and drain the lettuce and place it in a separate serving bowl.
Spoon the prepared mixture in the centre of the lettuce.
Garnish with walnut halves and serve.
Annabelle's tips
For a different version, add cooked, shredded chicken to the mixture.
