Waldorf Salad

The delicious combination of apple, celery, walnuts and mayonnaise. There are many versions and this is a classic.

 1 small red apple
 3 cups lettuce
 2 medium celery stalks
 1 shallot
 2 cloves garlic
 2 tbsp mayonnaise
 1 lemon - juice
 6 tbsp walnuts
 freshly ground black pepper

A salad with history! Waldorf salad is named for the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, where it was first created for a charity ball given in honour of the St. Mary's Hospital for Children on March 14, 1896.

Getting started

Wash the apple thoroughly. Dice it in small pieces and place in a small bowl.

Add freshly squeezed lemon juice and mayonnaise and leave to marinate for 20-30 minutes (if you can).

Finely chop the shallot and the celery stalk, mash the garlic and add everything to the bowl.

Season with black pepper to taste and mix everything well.

Add roughly chopped walnuts, keep some halves aside for garnish.

Wash and drain the lettuce and place it in a separate serving bowl.

Spoon the prepared mixture in the centre of the lettuce.

Garnish with walnut halves and serve.

For a different version, add cooked, shredded chicken to the mixture.
