When it comes to the concept of ageing and retirement, it’s hard to deny how it remains lined with negative connotations and discouraging dialogue. For many people, the idea of ageing is something they dread and sometimes even fear. With the media and beauty industry constantly dishing out terms such as “anti-ageing”, “age-defying”, etc. it’s no wonder why so many people continue to perceive this time of our lives as something to be frowned upon.
However, we here at FA60 believe it’s time for some long-overdue change. Over the past few months, we have been working behind the scenes to establish a new name for those in their third stage of life. Having worked and collaborated with so many incredible individuals who fall under this demographic, it is clear that there is absolutely nothing shameful or disappointing about this stage in life. It should be something celebrated and honoured!
Back in May, we published an article addressing this same topic and asked for your input on what we should rename this stage of life. In contrast to the decrepit and defeatist connotations that come with the concept of retirement, our survey showed that the majority of our community voted for this period to be called “Freedom Years”, with “Leisure Years”, and “Prime Time” trailing behind only by a few points. As we push forward with pioneering this movement, The FA60 squad is excited to be integrating this new phrase into all of our communications moving forward.
We also want to simply take this opportunity to thank every single person who took the time to respond to our survey and help us as we strive to pioneer this movement!
With all this in mind, we’ve put together some key points to consider as we navigate our ‘Freedom Years’.
‘Freedom Years’ looks different for everyone
It’s important to bear in mind that the ‘freedom years’ look different for everyone. This phrase is not a one-size-fits-all, and that’s what makes it such a positive thing. For some, it can mean having the freedom to spend their time how they want, going on holidays as much as they please–free from the stress of their careers. To others, it can look like having the freedom of no longer having to worry about a mortgage, school fees, etc.
Your understanding and concept of your ‘freedom years’ solely depends on you, and that is exactly what sets it apart from the phrases that are currently used in the media today!
Your mindset matters
A positive mindset is everything, regardless of how old you are! It fosters resilience, enabling you to navigate the inevitable changes that retirement brings. Instead of viewing this period of our life as a loss of identity, consider it an opportunity for reinvigoration. This shift in perspective can open doors to new hobbies, interests, and social connections that enrich your life. Whether it’s picking up a long-forgotten passion, volunteering for a cause close to your heart, or travelling to places you’ve always wanted to visit, a positive mindset empowers you to take charge of your newfound freedom.
Learning never stops
As we step into our freedom years, the idea of lifelong learning becomes not just a pursuit, but a profound opportunity to enrich our lives with new skills and knowledge. Retirement is no longer the end of a journey; it is the beginning of an exciting chapter where the world is ripe for exploration and growth.
Embracing lifelong learning means challenging the notion that education is confined to the classroom or the early stages of life. Instead, it invites us to engage with a plethora of resources available at our fingertips. From online courses that offer everything from digital photography to coding, to local community classes that teach pottery or gardening, the options are as varied as they are accessible. Many universities now offer courses tailored specifically for seniors, allowing us to indulge our passions in a supportive environment filled with peers who share our enthusiasm.
